Intensive care unit (ICU)

The intensive care unit (ICU) at Infirmary West delivers high-quality, innovative care and treatment for patients with serious injuries or illnesses. Located on the third floor of the East Tower, the 10-bed ICU is staffed by highly skilled health care professionals.

Patients admitted to the ICU are generally very ill and may require special breathing machines if they can no longer breathe on their own. ICU patients must be on monitors to continuously measure their blood pressure, heartbeat, breathing and body temperature.

Nurses staffing the ICU are specially trained in critical care procedures and equipment. Patients may stay for no more than one day in the ICU, or for weeks. When they are medically able to leave the ICU, they usually do not go directly home but to another area in the hospital.

Due to the high level of care necessary in the ICU, visiting times are:

  • 8:30 to 9 a.m.
  • 11:30 a.m. to noon.
  • 2:30 to 3 p.m.
  • 5:30 to 6 p.m.
  • 8 to 8:30 p.m.
